Projects

SEDI is pursuing six major projects in 2009:

  1. Northern Arizona Workforce Training Center. Beginning with a feasibility study for a “regional entity for sustainability, prosperity, equity and vitality,” this project brings together many similar ideas that have been circulating in the region among leaders in business, government, education and workforce development. The focus is on practical training and certification for the green jobs of today and for the emerging green economy.
  2. Zero Energy Neighborhood (ZEN) Homes Initiative. This initiative seeks to coordinate a collaborative effort among public and private partners seeking to leverage economic stimulus package dollars for weatherization and energy efficiency retrofits of existing buildings. Coupled with a grassroots neighborhood organizing effort that will focus on deep energy retrofits coupled with small scale renewable energy, the ultimate goal is to dramatically reduce carbon emissions over the next 10-15 years while building community pride and neighborhood cohesion.
  3. Education Sustainability Infusion Initiative. The 21st century will reward students who recognize early in their academic careers that there are tremendous opportunities in the rapidly emerging green economy. This initiative convenes the region’s top educators and future thinkers to organize and pursue an effort to infuse sustainability concepts and systems into the educational system.
  4. SEDI Business Network. This Web 2.0 application is designed to promote local businesses while incentivizing their sustainability practices. The “Business to You” element enables participating business to gain greater status and visibility on the site by 1) providing information about their products and services, and 2) increasing their sustainability policies and practices. The “Business to Business” section will provide opportunities to make collective purchases and develop shared resources.
  5. Sustainability Measurement and Indicators. A special task force is defining regional metrics (measures of prosperity / sustainability / quality of life) in order to establish a baseline and subsequently measure progress toward broad regional goals.
  6. Camp Navajo Development. A special task force of community leaders has been assembled to promote the development of a portion of the Army National Guard Base in Bellemont west of Flagstaff as a green business park.
