The Department of Construction Technology & Management (CTM) offers two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Technology degrees in:
- Alternative Energy
- Architectural Design
- Construction
CTM also offers two-year Associate of Arts (AA) degrees in:
- Vocational Education
- Construction Management
The AA degrees are designed for transfer into Vocational Technology Education or Construction Management bachelor's degree programs at Northern Arizona University.
Eight certificate programs are available for students interested in a one-year program. These include two in Alternative Energy and one in Construction Technology.
The Fall 2007 "Sustainable Living Series" of Alternative Energy classes starts in late August. They can all be applied to the Alternative Energy AAS degree.
Intro to Solar Applications
CTM 298, 1 Cr Hr 22 Sept Saturday- 9:00am to 5:00pm
Basic introduction to the concepts and principles related to Solar Energy Applications. A survey of the many ways that Solar Energy can be used in your home and life. Basic Solar Principles for home heating, Solar Water Heating and Solar Electric systems basics are covered.
Innovative & Alternative Building
CTM 250, 3 Cr Hr Tuesdays 6:10pm -9:00pm
This class surveys a variety of new, innovative and age-old building techniques such as Straw Bale, Rammed Earth, Adobe, "Rastra", ICF's, SIP's, Earth Ships & Papercrete from a "Green" building and "Pattern Language" design perspective.
Green Building Workshop
CTM 298, 1 Cr Hr 19, 20, 21 October: Friday 6:00 - 9:00pm, Saturday 9:00 am - 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am -4:30pm
Fundamentals concepts and Categorical approach to Sustainable & Green Building. See the benefits of efficient & High Performance design. Learn what a "Green Building Checklist" does to help design & build your home, save you money and safeguard occupant health.
Solar Greenhouse Design
CTM 298, 1 Cr Hr - 2, 3, 4 Nov. Friday 6:00 - 9:00pm, Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am -12:30pm
Learn what it takes to design a Solar Greenhouse that allows you to grow year round in Flagstaff. This class describes the design of a Solar Greenhouse at a residence. Learn how to read Sun Angles & Solar Path diagrams. Basics of heat transfer & Thermal Mass covered. Construction details, materials & Glazings associated with greenhouse construction described.
Building the Human Environment
CTM 120, 3 Cr Hr Tues, Weds, Thurs. 10:00 -11:15am
This class explores the great variety of design considerations for planning and designing a house, using the perspective from the "Pattern Language" book. A survey of influential architects is presented. Contemporary urban issues such as "Sprawl," land use & planning are discussed via qroup & individual projects. Green Buildinq Cateqories introduced.
